Roulette Rules

Basics: Roulette is a game of chance played by any number of players around a game table composed of a wheel and a felt, on which bets are placed. The dealer represents the casino and handles the wheel, the ball, bets and payouts. The ball is spun inside a spinning wheel, in the opposite direction, on a track that contains 36 pockets numbered 1 to 36 and one or two 0 pockets depending on the game variation (please see below for more details). Half of the numbered pockets are red and half are black. The 0 and 00 pockets are not associated with any color and appear on a green background.  The goal is to predict the number that comes up when the ball falls in a pocket of the casino roulette.

Place your bet: When placing a straight bet on a specific number, you win when the number comes up.
When you bet on a group of numbers, you win if a number that belongs to this group is displayed.

The amount paid out is a multiplier of the amount you bet. It varies depending on the type of bet.

Different types of bets can be made at each spin of the wheel: on a single number or on a group of numbers; playing the black or red numbers being among the best known bets. Play a free online roulette game in one of our recommended casinos to become familiar with the rules.

European roulette: The wheel that has one 0 pocket is referred to as European Roulette variation. The wheel of a European Roulette contains a total of 37 pockets. The first number to the right of zero is red and the next is black, and so on.

American roulette: On the other hand, the American Roulette has an additional pocket marked 00 (Double Zero). The American Roulette’s wheel consists of 38 pockets. The first number right of zero is black, and so on, but actually the numbers on the wheels have the same color in both variations.

Roulette Odds And Payouts

Roulette payouts are calculated in odds that have a ratio of x to 1. The table is divided in Inside and Ouside Bets.

Inside bets are placed within the number grid printed on the felt. They win less often, but trigger much bigger payouts.

  • Straight or Single –betting on one specific number. Payout is 35:1.
  • Split – allows playing two horizontal or vertical numbers simultaneously. Payout is 17:1.
  • Street – betting on the 3 numbers of a row. Payout is 11:1.
  • Square – when placing a bet at the intersection of four touching numbers for payout at 8:1.
  • Top Line – when the player wishes to play the numbers at the top of the grid. That’s “0, 1, 2, 3” in European Roulette or the only five number bet “0, 00, 1, 2, 3” in American Roulette. The payout is 6:1.
  • Six-number or Line bet – placing a bet simultaneously on two rows. It pays out at 5:1.

Outside bets are placed outside the grid of numbers and are lost when the ball falls on 0 or 00, but these winning combinations come out much more often.

  • Red or Black – the player bets on the color of the number that will come out. This bet pays out 1:1.
  • Even or Odd – betting on either an odd or even number outcome. This bet also pays out 1:1.
  • Low or High – betting on whether the number belongs to the lower half of the grid (1 to 18) or the high half (19-36). This bet also pays out even odds (1:1).
  • Columns – placing the bet at the bottom of one of the three columns, there’s a 2:1 payout.
  • Dozens – picking one of the three dozens on the table, the first (P=1-12), the second (M=13-24), or the third (D=25-36). This bet also has a 2:1 payout.

The house edge informs players on the measure of risk they take when playing a specific online casino game. The conventional definition of house edge is the ratio of the average loss to the initial bet, but another way to define it is the ratio of money lost to total money wagered. The difference involves the amounts at stake for a player.

The odds of winning against the casino are always lower than the payout amounts, but the potential to win a big amount on one bet is much higher when playing a Roulette game compared to other table games such as Craps or Baccarat.

Roulette Strategies

Roulette is a game of chance by definition, so the probability of winning is technically always the same, but there are betting strategies based on mathematical methods that maximize the profits and minimize the house advantage by keeping the losses under control.

These roulette systems have many names: Martingale, Paroli, d’Alembert … Please read more about these betting techniques in a more detailed article.

Top 5 Playing tips

  1. Plan a budget: Before starting a Roulette game, plan a budget and stick to it. Doing so will allow you to minimize your losses on bad days.
  2. Play European Roulette: Always favor playing at European Roulette. The payout odds are the same, but the additional 00 in American Roulette lowers the odds of players because there’s 1 chance in 38 to win a straight bet, compared to odds of 1:37 at European Roulette.
  3. Different Bets: Simple bets, like playing a color, have the best chance to earn you money, but the amounts are lower than when placing a straight bet, where colossal amounts can be won if luck comes your way.
  4. Wagering Requirements: Use the previous tip to your advantage when you have to meet wagering requirements to unlock a bonus. Always follow this rule when playing roulette online: place simple outside bets when using a bonus.
  5. Stop on time: Regardless of the amount of money you have earned, always have in mind that the wheel keeps turning (intended pun). Never put all your previous earnings back into play to avoid losing your hard won money if you run out of luck.

Game Variations

The 2 best known variations are European and American Roulette, but there are actually 4 different versions of this game.

English Roulette: uses a different table layout, but it is also considered as European Roulette because there’s a single 0 number.

Mexican Roulette: also has a Triple-Zero (000). That makes a total of 39 numbers, and therefore gives the house a slight advantage compared to the other versions.

The best way to approach Roulette is to consider it an entertaining and fun game.
Regardless of the strategy you adopt, keep in mind that roulette is the game that offers the greatest profit margin at the casino.
