French Roulette

You don’t have to be bilingual to enjoy French roulette. You just need to find an online French roulette game at one of our top Canadian casinos, for a bit of international flair on the little wheel.

How to Play

Here in Canada, we’re mostly more prone to playing American roulette because, hey, there’s something to be said for proximity. And let’s be honest here, terms like French generally have a different connotation for us – like language laws, official bilingualism, and the likes. But the only thing the French roulette wheel has to do with that little bit of background is perhaps, if you weren’t paying attention in French class, that the word roulette is actually French for little wheel itself!

Language lesson aside, what’s there to know when you’re looking to play French roulette online?

  • French roulette rules – Well that’s easy. There are known per se. The regular roulette rules apply.
  • Game mechanics – Basically all that’s happening is there’s a roulette wheel, a betting table, chips of different values, and a virtual croupier (when playing the online version).
  • Onscreen commands – There are a number of buttons and functions to familiarise yourself with when you play French roulette online. These will, of course, differ between the casino software being used (say Microgaming or Playtech), but may include options like ‘Zoom’ (to zoom in on the action), ‘Audio’ (so you can hear the action unfold), ‘Bet’ (to set your wager amount), ‘Undo’ (if you want to adjust your bet), ‘Rebet’ (if you’d like to place the same bet again), and ‘Spin’ (to set the wheel in motion).
  • How you win – Bets are placed, the wheel is spun, and the ball lands in one of the pockets to determine if you win. The payout is set according to a predefined paytable for each type of bet.

French Roulette vs. Regular Roulette

While on most days us Canadians like to differentiate from our Southern neighbours, when it comes to roulette we tend to identify with them, strongly favouring the American version of the game. But that doesn’t mean American roulette is regular roulette in the rest of the world. In fact, in both Europe and Asia there’s a strong preference for French roulette (which is actually the same as European roulette).

So how do these games differ? Well, there are two small main differences on the wheels of each respective game. The first is the number sequence, which differs between the French roulette wheel and the American roulette wheel. Nice to know, but not really consequential as number sequence can’t possibly affect the random luck of the game.

The real differentiator between the roulette wheels is in the number of zeros on the wheel with one zero (0) pocket on the French roulette wheel and two zero (00) pockets on the American roulette wheel. One less zero actually gives you an advantage, by significantly lowering the house edge in comparison to American roulette (which has a 5.26% house edge). This makes French roulette (with a 2.7% house edge) a better choice by most opinions.

Playing Roulette Online

There are a couple of huge advantages to playing roulette online, and they include, in no particular order:

  • A wide range of roulette games available – Because online roulette takes place in the virtual sphere, there are no physical limitations for accommodating different roulette games. This means that playing online gives you the widest number of options in terms of game variation, all in one place, including proprietary roulette games you won’t encounter offline, even in the best casinos in Vegas or Macau.
  • There’s always a space at the virtual wheel – You don’t have to take your turn, or adhere to a casino’s hours. You can log in to any one of our recommended online roulette casinos (see the list above), any time of the day, and set the wheel in motion, on your command.
  • It’s SOOOO convenient – You don’t have to drive overnight to Windsor or Niagara Falls. In fact, no transportation is needed at all. Online roulette is just a click away from any laptop, PC or mobile phone. Plus, if you’re playing at one of our recommended casinos, you’ll also be privy to some extra money in the form of a welcome bonus which can be extra useful when you’re getting started.
  • You can play for free – Bonuses are great for garnering you extra play, but how about free spins? If you’re looking to play a French roulette free game, that’s only going to happen online, in what’s called ‘Free’, ‘Fun Play’, or ‘Demo’ mode.

Roulette Tips

While there’s loads of advice available on roulette strategy, betting systems and the likes, there are a few basics to consider even before:

  • Keep in mind there is no such thing as French roulette strategy (or any roulette strategy really). Roulette is predominantly a game of luck, and you should relate to it as such.
  • As previously noted, French roulette has better odds than American roulette, so it may be a better choice of games.
  • Red-black, odds-evens and high-low bets (all of which are considered outside bets) may pay the lowest, but they also have the best odds.
  • There are loads of different roulette games available online, including French roulette and American roulette of course, as well as Live Roulette (with a live dealer streamed to your screen), Premier Roulette, Multiplayer Roulette, Wheel of Riches and much, much more. Have a look under the ‘Table Games’ tab or ‘Roulette’ tab if one exists, for a list of your possible options. And remember, trying something new is one of the best parts of internet gaming, so make the most of it whenever you can.
