American Roulette

Roulette may have started in France, but the Americans literally added to it with a double zero (00) pocket. So instead of 37 pockets, the American roulette wheel features 38, as can be enjoyed here:

How to Play

If you’re already familiar with the basics of online roulette, then you’re pretty much set to play American roulette. The extra zero on the wheel doesn’t actually affect the mechanics of game play, except perhaps your strategy in placing bets (marginally). But if you’re not much familiar with online roulette, then it’s important to first understand how online American roulette works.

So what’s there to know:

  • How to find an American roulette game – All online casinos will have at least one American roulette game on offer. It will be found either under the ‘Roulette’ tab if one exists, or listed under ‘Table Games’.
  • Choose your bet amount – Just like at a regular casino, when you play American roulette online, you will need to place a bet with chips. The chips each have a cash value, usually ranging from $1-$100. Onscreen, there are also commands to ‘Remove’, ‘Clear All,’ and ‘Repeat’ to make placing a bet easier.
  • Place your bet on the table – As importantly as the number of coins per round, you will also have to choose where you’re placing your bet on the wheel. Black, red, a certain number or a predefined sequence. It’s up to you.
  • Spin – Once you’re ready, there’s no croupier here, so you’ll need to click the ‘Spin’ button to set the wheel in motion.
  • Win? – If the ball lands where you bet, then lucky you, you win!

American Roulette vs. Regular Roulette

Who’s to say what’s regular really, even when it comes to roulette? For those in Europe, French roulette (also referred to as European roulette) is your standard fare. But here in Canada, we tend to associate more closely with our neighbors, so American roulette rules.

The similarities are everything: That is, the same game mechanism is entirely at play. The wheel has red and black pockets, each with a number, there’s an actual table upon which you place your bets, and the little ball that bounces around in the wheel once it’s spun is exactly the same.

So what is different? The only difference really is that instead of one green pocket labeled “0”, there is a green “0” and a green “00” on the American roulette wheel. This makes American roulette strategy slightly different than the strategy used in other roulette games. Plus, if you look closely, the numbers are actually sequenced differently on the American roulette wheel and the French/European roulette wheel – though that really doesn’t affect play (roulette’s totally random after all). And that’s about it!

However, keep in mind, the odds in American roulette are lower than European roulette since it has an extra pocket (which means an extra variable). That means the house edge in European/French roulette is around 2.7%, while in American roulette it’s almost double at 5.26%. But when it comes to probabilities between games for each type of spin, there’s much less difference, so it’s far less of a factor to consider if you’re prone to do so.

Also, on the rather trivial side, some casinos will offer you what’s called the en prison rule (for an extra spin) on European roulette tables, but never on American roulette.

Playing American Roulette Online

It’s always fun to play roulette online: especially at one of our preferred Canadian casinos, as those listed above. In addition to American roulette, they each offer a wide variety of roulette games, with top gaming software to ensure worry-free entertainment with every spin.

Plus, with the welcome bonus, you’re entitled to when you join: you’re well equipped for a few extra rounds. Better yet, play an American roulette free game in practice mode, to get acquainted with the game at zero risks. Then once you’re ready, move over to real money wagers, to make the game that much more exciting, and potentially rewarding.

Roulette Tips

Whether you’re playing American roulette or some other roulette game, there are always a couple of general roulette tips to keep in mind, to make your experience more enjoyable, and hopefully more profitable.

  • An American roulette free game is always a good way to get started (as mentioned above), as it gives you the chance to practice before you move into real money mode.
  • If you’re looking for higher probability when it comes to landing a win, you should likely go with a European roulette game.
  • Even bets, i.e. red or black, are better odds bets. The worst odds are offered by a Straight, Split or Street Bet, so only make those if you’re an adrenaline junky or have plenty of cash to spare.
  • If you want to use a certain betting system like the Martingale or Labouchere betting system in your roulette play, then make sure to study it first. As above, you may want to then apply it in free practice mode, ‘til you get the hang of it. Also remember, these are just systems, and are not scientifically proven to improve your odds.
  • Bankroll management is key to making online gambling fun. Always keep an eye on your bottom line, and know when it’s time to take a break.
