How to Play Caribbean Stud Poker

Whether new to the game or looking for a refresher course, we’ve got an easy look at the rules of Caribbean stud for players in Canada. Caribbean stud poker has rules similar to five-card stud poker. Yet unlike a standard game of poker, Caribbean stud players go up against the house rather than against other players. This version of poker also doesn’t incorporate bluffing or any other type of deception.

Progressive jackpot: When the game begins, each player places a bet called “the ante” on the designated area of the table.  Players also have the option to participate in the progressive jackpot of the game. This is a side bet that players win if they hit a straight flush (a hand containing all of one suit in continuous sequence). These jackpots are progressive meaning all qualifying bets placed by the players at the table or playing the same Caribbean stud poker online game contributes toward the jackpot. The progressive jackpot pays 100% of the jackpot meter for a royal flush and 10% for a straight flush.

No more bets: Now moving on… Next, the dealer announces, “No more bets”. Then the dealer and each player receive 5 cards, face down. The dealer starts by turning over one of his cards before pushing the cards toward the players. Now, each player can look at their hand. They may only look at their own hand and not at other players’ hands.

At this point, each player has two options: to play or fold. Folding means to discard your hand and forfeit the current pot of money. This means the player will no longer participate and cannot win.

Players who choose to play will place his raise, an additional bet equal to twice the amount of the ante. The player puts the bet in the area of the table marked “bet”. After all players choose to play or fold, the dealer reveals the remaining 4 cards of their hand. The dealer qualifies to continue playing if his hand either a) contains an ace and a king or b) contains a pair or any higher ranked poker hand.

Now the dealer compares his hand to the players’ hands individually starting with the player to the far right. If a player’s hand does not beat the hand of the dealer’s, then they lose the bet including both the ante and the raised bet. If the dealer’s hand does not qualify to begin with, all players receive their bets, breaking even. A player whose hand beats the dealer will receive payouts according to the following:

Royal flush

  • A straight flush including an ace, king, queen, jack, and 10 of the same suit
  • Payout: 100 to 1
  • 100% of jackpot
  • Probability: 0.000001

Straight flush

  • A hand containing all of one suit in continuous sequence
  • Payout: 50 to 1
  • 10% of jackpot
  • Probability: 0.000008

Four of a kind

  • A hand containing four cards of the same rank
  • Payout: 20 to 1
  • Probability: 0.000142

Full house

  • A hand containing three matching cards of one rank and two matching cards of another rank
  • Payout: 7 to 1
  • Probability: 0.000834

  • A hand containing five non-sequential cards of the same suit
  • Payout: 5 to 1
  • Probability: 0.001097

  • A hand containing sequential cards in at least different suits
  • Payout: 4 to 1
  • Probability: 0.002198

Three of a kind

  • A hand containing three cards of the same rank
  • Payout: 3 to 1
  • Probability: 0.011751

Two pair

  • A hand containing two cards of the same rank plus another set of cards of the same rank
  • Payout: 2 to 1
  • Probability: 0.024482

One pair or less

  • A hand containing two cards of the same rank
  • Payout: 1 to 1
  • Probability: 0.117555

Of course, with Caribbean stud poker, the hands that pay out more have a lower probability. For example, a royal flush has the highest payout of 100 to 1, but this hand has a probability of 0.000001. Meanwhile, one of a pair or less has a higher probability of 0.117555 with a lower payout of 1 to 1.

House edge: A casino has to make a profit just like any other business. For this reason, casinos use something called a house edge to ensure that they inevitably make a profit. This gives the casino an advantage over the player. Typically, casinos use a house edge of 5.22% for a game of online Caribbean stud poker. This means for every dollar bet on a game of Caribbean stud poker online, the gambling site makes a profit of 0.0522 ¢.

The house edge of Caribbean stud fairs pretty average in comparison to other games. Take for example, online slots machines, which typically have a house edge ranging from 2%-15%. Roulette usually has house edge ranging from 2.70%-5.26%. Meanwhile online blackjack typically has a house edge of 0.5%.

Caribbean Stud Poker Strategy

Regardless of the house edge, you can still find ways to beat the dealer. It can take time to get a feel for the game and develop a proper strategy. However, knowing a few key strategies gives players a better chance of winning. We recommend that a player raise or fold according to each of the following circumstances:

  • Raise with a pair or higher
  • Raise if the dealer’s card is 2 through queen and matches one of your cards
  • Raise if the dealer’s card is an ace or king and you have a queen or jack in your hand
  • Raise if the dealer’s card does not match any of your cards, you have a queen in your hand, and the dealer’s card is less than your fourth highest card
  • Fold if you hand is less than the dealer’s qualifying hand (an ace or king).

Practice different strategies: It can take some time to learn the ins and outs of the game. That’s why we recommend that you play free Caribbean stud poker games before betting real money.
